A practical guide to reducing image size without losing the details that matter
Large images slow down a website, take longer to send by email, and can be rejected by marketplace or form upload limits. Compression reduces the amount of data needed to store an image so it is easier to share and faster to load. The best result is not simply the smallest possible file; it is the smallest file that still looks right where people will see it.

Choose settings for the job, not a universal number
For a normal website image, a maximum dimension around 1600–1920 pixels and a target under 1 MB is a practical starting point. A small thumbnail can usually be much smaller, while a full-width portfolio image may need more pixels to remain crisp on wide screens. Email providers and listing sites sometimes specify an exact maximum; set that as the target, but leave a little margin in case their own checks differ.
Screens display a fixed number of pixels, so an image that is far larger than its display area carries data nobody can see. Resizing before or while compressing is especially useful for camera photos, which are often thousands of pixels wide. Keep enough source resolution for the largest place the image will appear, rather than using the same file for a thumbnail and a print brochure.

What compression changes

At moderate settings the difference may be hard to notice, but strong compression can create blockiness, smudged fine detail, or banding in smooth skies and shadows. PNG is often used for logos, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges; it does not always shrink as dramatically as a photo.
File size and dimensions are related but separate controls. Lowering the maximum dimensions asks the browser to create fewer pixels. Lowering the target size asks the compressor to store those pixels more efficiently. For a photo that is huge in both dimensions and megabytes, reducing both usually gives the cleanest result. For a tiny screenshot that is already the right width, changing dimensions may be unnecessary.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not judge the result only from a tiny preview. Zoom in on the parts that must be accurate, such as product details, a signature, or text inside a screenshot. Also avoid repeatedly compressing an already-compressed JPG or WebP; each extra lossy pass can compound artifacts. Return to the original file when you need a new version.
Compression is not a substitute for choosing the right format. A photographic image is usually a better candidate for JPG or WebP than a large PNG. A graphic that needs transparency may need PNG or WebP instead. If you need to change the format as well as the size, use the format converter after deciding which qualities the final image needs.
